Byzantine Empire -- 1180 AD

  1. In the 1180 Map, Antioch was a vassal to Manuel, Emperor of Constantinople, but it was not directly controlled by the Empire.

Your comment may well be accurate as to the control, however, the map as drawn was not meant to detail the many "In and Outs" of a very complicated and Middle-Eastern political situation on any given year. In my studies of the Byzantine Empire it was a clever Emperor indeed who knew at any one time and place who was controlling what, and why! Remember too, as you well know, I am a novice at this business and have only been studying Byzantium for a year or so. Add to that, my well known allergy to anything political, and you have your answer in a nutshel (Grin!!).
