Dura-Europos

Dura-Europos
The Romans seized this city, on a cliff above the Euphrates River, from the Parthians in the second century A.D.

The Romans erected walls similar to the above in several places along the "Limes" where the terrain or the ease of a break-through by barbarians outside the boundaries of Roman lands was most likely.  In other areas, towers were used.
